| Hey, we made it to Northern Guatemala. The journey here was a bit more grueling than we expected, but, hey, this is how we vacation, right? We left Panajachel on Tuesday morning at 3am. We won't bore you with the details about the roving packs of dogs, growling and barking at anything that moved or the long waits for shuttles. Once we arrived at Tikal around 9am, we started our tour of the park. After the cool weather in the highlands, the heat in Tikal was brutal. This is the part where I expect we will not get any sympathy, since we understand that many of you had snow recently. We felt your pain, all the way to the pool. Anyway, Tikal is truly inspiring. We spent two nights in the park and had several chances to wander amongst the ruins. There were even times we nearly had the park to ourselves. Imagine being in one of the world's top historical sites and not having to share it with anyone at all!
Bonus: Today we visited the Mayan ruins at Yaxha. Some of the pictures might look familiar if you watched 'Survivor: Guatemala'. This was another site that we virtually had to ourselves. Part of the interest is that there are many structures still entombed by the earth and several more in various stages of archeological exploration. |
