Hieroglyphic Stairway Ball court We are a few hundred miles from the coast, so where did the turtle come from?
Welcome to Copán. You have no idea how happy we are to be here. Our second day of travel posed fewer actual risks but was no less uncomfortable. Let's just suffice it to say that we left Puerto Barrios around 8am and four busses later we arrived in Copán around 3pm. I did not realize until Saturday that it is possible to squeeze five people into a row that had three seats. Such innovation we encounter in life.

So here we are anyway. Sunday we went to see the nearby ruins. John and I just can't get enough of the ruins, you know. The differences between here and Tikal are striking. Think of Tikal as Manhattan - big, bold, with an in-your-face attitude about its might and size. In contrast, Copán seems more like Paris - proud and boastful, as well, but done with an artistic style and flair. When I first saw the ruins at Copán, I thought 'Is this all there is?' Then I got up close and was blown away. For that reason, we are posting pics that show close-ups of the figures and hieroglyphics carved into stone. Check out the picture of the famous 'Hieroglyphic Staircase' that is carved from top to bottom and along the sides. The 2200 or so stones depict the entire history of Copan and the 16 rulers of the Yax K'uk Mo' dynasty. I think you will enjoy.

By the way, we are back in school as of today. We started Spanish lessons this morning and are both very happy with our teachers. For now, this site may have to enter repeat season, or maybe our producers can throw together one of those silly 'best-of' episodes.
