 | | The beach at La Libertad looks cleaner than it actually is. |
| | La Libertad is a beach town just an hour south of the capital, San Salvador. It is a dump. We arrived late in the morning and even though we checked in right away, we were not able to settle into our room until four hours later. They had a few problems getting everything in order and we had a few problems understanding what they were saying. We had time during this wait to get some lunch, walk around town, play on the Internet, and chat with the American owner of the Internet café. We were underwhelmed with the town. The beaches were surprisingly trashy and the town itself was much more run down than we expected. It is an old port town that was badly damaged by an earthquake in 2001 and which appears to have never recovered. Along the waterfront we saw a series of abandoned buildings right next to a park that was strongly reminiscent of a landfill in both appearance and odor. It was also very hot, so all that trash had plenty of time to cook. We decided that one day was enough time here. |
