Parque Centroamericano Lenten procession in Xela Lenten procession in Xela
Our quick tour of Panajachel ended this morning as we boarded a shuttle to Quetzaltenango, aka Xela. The drive through the mountains on the InterAmerican Highway was beautiful although scarred by washouts from last year's Hurrican Stan. We arrived in Xela in the early afternoon and were left at the door of our school, as instructed. In spite of our reservations, though, the school did not seem ready for us. We waited for about 90 minutes at the school before our family showed up to drive us to our digs for the next few weeks. Turned out that they were not really ready for us, either, as we were dropped a few houses down at a relative's house. For 4 hours. At least we had time for a quick walk about Xela (escorted by a young relative of our hosts) and a fortuitous encounter with a Lenten procession. Around 7, our real host family made it back to town and was ready for us. They are very nice, but let's say that our brains were really fried with all the Spanish being thrown our way all day and evening by the two families!
